Sharing research with the community

Older adults and their families gathered at the San Marcos Activity Center on Thursday, October 22, for the 12th Senior Citizen Expo. The day was full of local resources, health information, and community connections. As a proud sponsor of the Expo, THRC joined the community to share research focused on healthy aging.

The THRC team also shared information about current research projects and studies on healthy aging. The Alliance of Research in Aging (ARIA) joined the table to share tips on memory and sleep. Attendees could also sign up to hear about future opportunities to take part in research, both in person and virtually.

Two THRC Faculty Fellows were at the table to talk with attendees about their research:

Dr. Nadim Adi, Assistant Professor in the School of Family & Consumer Sciences, studies how home design can help people with dementia live safely. His project, NuroNest, is exploring how AI can help identify safety risks in the home.

Dr. Rebecca Deason, Professor in the Department of Psychology, is part of a research team studying how sleep and social connection relate to memory and language as we age.

They were joined by Marsha Burney, THRC Director of Community Relations, and Marcos Quintanilla, THRC Student Fellow. Megan Shephard, Research Coordinator in the Department of Psychology, also assisted at the table.
