Health Scholar Showcase Frequently Asked Questions

    • The Health Scholar Showcase is an event intended to foster dialog and networking among a growing number of Texas State faculty representing over 30 departments, schools, and centers in eight colleges. External guests from foundations, nonprofits, and other institutions in the area will also be invited to attend.
    • Speakers include the CEO of St. David's Foundation, the CEO of CTMC, and the provost.
    • Deans from each college on campus were invited to submit up to six thematic posters representing health research among faculty in their colleges.
    • The event will include a Spotlight on Federal Funding to showcase currently funded NIH and HHS research and programs at Texas State.
    • There will be a book exhibit showcasing health-related books written by Texas State faculty members.
    • Each aspect of the event will be designed to allow attendees to introduce themselves and get to know the community of Texas State health researchers, explore information about current areas of research focus, and learn about future opportunities for research and sponsored programs.
    • Research seeking to improve human health is not the domain of one academic discipline.
    • There are currently faculty representing at least 30 different Texas State departments, schools, and centers and at least 8 colleges engaged in health-related research and sponsored programs activities. Health research is an area of tremendous opportunity and growth among faculty in every college on our campus. This event seeks to provide information and support for those interested in health research by connecting them with a larger community of Texas State health researchers.
  • The theme this year is Promoting Community Health. This theme is intended to showcase applied research on social, economic, political, environmental, nutritional, technological, educational, and healthcare issues that combine to affect the health of individuals and communities. Faculty are encouraged to submit posters that reflect current or recently completed research such as community-based interventions or partnerships, product development research, health care improvement programs, or any other study seeking to translate research into reality to positively impact health and/or healthcare.

  • No, not initially. There is no limit per college for posters submitted before January 20th. After January 20th, we will seek to ensure representative inclusion of poster submissions from underrepresented colleges so posters will be accepted on a daily or case-by-case basis. We will regularly inform the research coordinators about remaining available space beginning in late January. No additional submissions will be accepted after the space is full.

  •  Research on social determinants of health. We seek a representative group of submissions on social determinants of population and community health as presented in Figure 2 on The Kellogg Family Foundation website. The KFF website also discusses the links between Social Determinants of Health and Research Funding and Policy. Mary Wooley from Research America will touch on this topic in her keynote address. The exact topics listed under each heading in the KFF Figure 2 are examples only.

  • Yes.To encourage as many faculty as possible to participate, individual faculty members are limited to one poster submission each, or two poster submissions if both posters represent research conducted by a multi-investigator research team. Posters and poster slides for printing must be submitted by the unit research coordinator for the college of the first author on the poster. We hope the deans. Associate deans, and research coordinators will help ensure the authenticity of the research projects submitted from their unit (actively ongoing or recently completed research projects), and help facilitate a fair process for selecting posters to represent research from faculty in their college. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis until no additional space is available, so we encourage research coordinators to work with your dean to develop a process of approval and submission that maximizes the number of high quality and representative research posters you submit.

  • Posters will be accepted beginning immediately on a rolling basis until the space is full. We will continuously monitor available space prior to submission. Our goal is to avoid posters being created that cannot be included due to space demands close to the event date.

  • The absolute final submission date for poster information to be included in the event program is February 17th, 2018, but there is no guarantee we will have space available to take submissions up until this date. Please send corrections of poster or author information as soon as possible so we can correct it as the program is developed. We will provide routine updates to the research coordinators in January and February to keep everyone informed about available space in each category.

  • There are numerous websites to assist with poster preparation. Posters should be created as one Power Point slide. Printed posters should be no smaller than 24 x 36, and no larger than 36 x 48, unless otherwise approved in advance. Posters do not need to be printed on foam board, but foam board is allowed. Posters printed on paper should be laminated if at all possible. Posters should include the names of each author on the study, and the name of the department/school and college/university center of the first author. Community partners and grant funding should be identified on the poster as well.

College and/or self-printing is greatly appreciated, but we do have limited funds to assist colleges with printing costs this year. Recycled posters from previous presentations ARE welcome, as long as the fit with the them and goals of the event.

Faculty seeking to have their posters printed by Translational Health Research staff must submit one PowerPoint slide of their print-ready poster to their research coordinator by no later than February 3rd, 2018 so we can send out the posters to be printed at a reduced cost well in advance of the event date.
