A Visual Insight Into Tweeting Activity Before and During Natural Disasters: Case Study of Hurricane Harvey
Authors: Shadi Maleki and Milad Mohammadalizadehkorde
Big data provided by social media has been increasingly used in various fields of research, including disaster studies and emergency management. Effective data visualization plays a central role in generating meaningful insight from big data. However, big data visualization has been a challenge due to the high complexity and high dimensionality of it. The purpose of this study is to examine how the number and spatial distribution of tweets changed on the day Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Houston, Texas. For this purpose, this study analyzed the change in tweeting activity between the Friday of Hurricane Harvey and a typical Friday before the event.

Authors: Elizabeth Ekren, Rachel E. Hall, Eryn Pierdolla, Valerie Barnes, Alison Jarzombek-Torralva, Douglas Morrish, Kathy Martinez-Prather
Career and technical education (CTE) facilities on school campuses present unique security challenges due to their distinct layouts, structures, and equipment, which require tailored security considerations given expanding CTE student populations and increasing concerns of school violence. Drawing on principles of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) with Texas as a case application, this study developed a novel survey instrument to evaluate the influence of CTE facility design features and security activities on principals’ perceptions of facility security.

Resilience as a Concept for Convergence Across Health, Systems, and Well-Being: An AI-Augmented Mapping of 50 Years of Resilience Research
Authors: Elizabeth Ekren, Maria E. Tomasso, and Melinda M. Villagran
Resilience has become a focal point of academic research investigating the impact of adverse disruption to the well-being of people, systems, the built environment, ecosystems, and climate. However, the proliferation of this work has not been accompanied by increasing clarity about the core meaning of resilience as a singular construct, threatening its relevance and complicating its use in practice. To improve the application of resilience in cross-disciplinary and convergence approaches to sustainability and well-being research, this work synthesized resilience conceptualizations across disciplines with novel artificial intelligence (AI)-augmented approaches.
